  • Blog Day Afternoon August 16, 1977 - Blog Day Afternoon
Posted by Jeff (Tuesday August 16 2005 @ 07:06PM EDT)
On August 16, 1977 I was playing tennis during summer vacation. I got home and my mom told me that Elvis had died in a most inglorious manner. The King of Rock-n-Roll shat himself to death on the toilet. Twenty years after Elvis was toppled from the thrown, a curious thing happened: kids started listening to the music of their parents. In the 1990s, hippy music made a huge comeback. It wasn't the same in 1977. The Ramones had just issued Rocket To Russia, a ray of hope in the disco era. None of my friends listened to Elvis. He was a fat ol' fart who paraded around in rhinestones and I still don't know what they are.

As any Young Republican can tell you, kids today will rage for the Machine. As Elvis reached for one last handful of Charmin, the Machine was at an all-time low with people under thirty. In fact the Machine was little more than a petty crook who wanted to sieze your bag of weed and send you to die in god forsaken jungle. Elvis may have been "cool" in the eyes of greasers and the bobby soxers, but he still made a pact with the Devil. Nixon wasn't putting his arm around Joey Ramone. No sir. The President of the United States hated Jews; he called them "kikes." Joey's star was ascendent as Nixon's world collapsed. The Blitzkrieg Bop was first heard at CBGBs as Nixon left Washington in disgrace. Three years later Elvis died with his size 48s wrapped around his ankles and the Ramones toured the world as the Johnny Appleseeds of punk.

I'm not an Elvis fan, but I have to say - Graceland is worth the trip. It's actually a good tour. My dad and I went for the freak-factor but were surprised by how much we actually enjoyed ourselves. If you're ever in the area, go.

The number of Americans inducted and sent to Vietnam declined rapidly under Nixon. The draft itself was ended on his watch. I remember wiping the sweat off my nine-year old brow when I learned I wouldn't have to go.

I remember exactly where I was August 16, 1977.My recruiter was picking my Uniondale High School classmate and myself up from our homes on August 16,1977,ready to go to Bootcamp in San Antonio,Texas. It was a long day for processing at the NY Mep station in Brooklyn,NY. We then flew to TX and it was pretty late at night when one of the recruiters showed us the paper"The King Is Dead" Sad day for me and my friend from my HS.I think it was the only thing that haunted me while I was at bootcamp, because Elvis was suppose to be at the Nassau Coliseum,Uniondale,NY that month and my girlfriend had the ticket to go see him. I think she has it tucked away to this day!

I was on my way to College in Menlo Park California after visting someone in Albuquerque, NM. I'd just purchased a super clean 1967 Chevy Caprice Super Sport with leather bucket seats for $600. That's about $2-3,000 in today's dollars but I don't think you can find one in the condition of that one I bought for less then probably $20-30,000 today. Anyway I was driving that car across the Arizona desert when I heard on the radio Elvis was found dead.

I was being born on that day. I have a million jokes like, the king moved out and the queen moved in....and this world was not big enough for me an Elvis both. It is a good way to help people remember my birthday, it always on the news and this Aug. 16th I will be 30!

I had just come back in from making a round and he told me that the it had just come over the radio that Elvis had died. I. Couldn't Believe it untill I heard it on the radio myself.
