  • Blog Day Afternoon Faux News At The White House - Blog Day Afternoon
Posted by Jeff (Monday June 14 2004 @ 09:21PM EDT)
Bill and Hillary Clinton were in Washington today for the unveiling of their official portraits. During the White House ceremony President Bush offered a heart-felt tribute to its former occupants. The International Herald Tribune reported that President Bush offered Bill Clinton a "glowing tribute." CNN described a standing ovation for the Clintons and noted that Bush's tribute to his predecessor's "energy and joy." While it did note that the occasion was characterized by an "odd confluence of Republicans and Democrats," the New York Times reported that Bush praised the Clintons during the ceremony.

BUSH: Good morning. Laura and I appreciate you all coming. President Clinton and Senator Clinton, welcome home.

    (APPLAUSE)

All who live here are temporary residents. The portraits that are presented today will be held permanently in the White House collection, for all the ages.

And so, beginning today, the likenesses of President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will take their place in a line that began with George and Martha Washington.

    (APPLAUSE)

Laura and I are pleased to welcome members of the Clinton and Rodham families.

    Thank you all for coming.

    It's great to see Chelsea.

The fact that you survived your teenage years in the White House...

    (LAUGHTER)

... speaks to the fact you had a great mom and dad.

    (APPLAUSE)

We are pleased that Mrs. Dorothy Rodham is here.

    Welcome.We're glad you're here.

    (APPLAUSE)

And those two boys you're still trying to raise...

    (LAUGHTER)

... Hugh and Tony. Thank you for coming. We're glad you're here.

    (APPLAUSE)

It's good to see so many who served our nation so ably in the Clinton administration.

Thank you all for coming back. Thanks for your service to the country. And welcome back to the White House. We're really glad you're here. And I know the president is, as well...

I caught this live. Bush was charming and sincere. Noticeably absent from this ceromony was that Bushean smirk you love so well. The coverage of this event was indeed accurate. Bush had nothing but kind words and praise for the Clintons. There was, however, one exception. Here's how Faux News covered the event:

Former President Clinton and former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton unveiled their official White House portraits in an emotional East Room ceremony Monday.

Clinton said he was honored that his likeness is joining those of other chief executives, though he added it made him feel "like a pickle stepping into history." Sen. Clinton called the experience "daunting."

President Bush and his wife, Laura, participated in the ceremony with their predecessors.

The oil paintings are both by Simmie Knox...

I can't ever recall the unveiling of a former president's portrait receiving this much media coverage.

Think about it. The media swarmed the White House for one reason: They wanted to report on a smarmy introduction by a president who's known to detest his predecessor. In this regard, Dubya disappointed them.

Unlike Faux News, the right-wing nutjob Michael Savage accurately reported the event. But instead of altering reality, he added commentary. According to Savage, Dubya's participation in this event was a "big mistake."

If you haven't read the Pragmatist's column today, then check it out. He provides a case of exemplary behavior set by the father of this country.
