  • Blog Day Afternoon WWGD? - Blog Day Afternoon
Posted by Jeff (Sunday April 18 2004 @ 05:57PM EDT)
I was tapped on the shoulder this weekend, quite peculiar as I was only one present. I was touched by an unknown soul. Such metaphysical phenomena hardly goes unnoticed. As a result, I've decided to change my life. A new guiding principle now governs my actions. It is embodied in a four-letter rhetorical question: WWGD? From this day forth, when I'm faced with a conundrum, a test of my moral fortitude. I will get on my knees, clasp my fingers and pray to the one who made me, "What would George W. Bush do?"

The tapper gently rapping instructed me to turn on Fox News. When an unexplained phenomena tells you to turn on Fox News, then you god damn turn on Fox news. Israel had just assassinated the newly appointed leader of Hamas. The assassination came just days after Washington had granted Ariel Sharon all for which he asked. On the Arab Street, America is held responsible. This at the moment of Iraqi critical mass. "Jesus H. Christ!" I told the tapper. "Is there anything George W. Bush hasn't fucked up?"

From this moment forth, I vow to pattern myself the antithesis of George W. Bush. WWGD? Stop drinking? I'm going to turn it up a notch; instead of two, I'll have four. Become a born again believer? I'll be a god-damn atheist. Only a gay man in denial can think homosexuality is a lifestyle choice. I'll remain straight. WWGD? Butcher the English language? J'enverrai à la boucherie le français!

As tragic as any loss of life is, well, no, that's not entirely true, in any case, before I get into the semantics of that, I will proffer that a slight chuckle was released when I heard CNN declare that a new Hamas leader had been nominated, but "They refuse to divulge who it is".

Yes, lest the world know, and pop the new guy.

That was funny. It doesn't seem like they even need to announce the name. Israeli intelligence is so good that they probably already know who it is.

I just hope it's not me! Some joker might have put my name down on the application, and that's not cool.

I'm really more of an Arab Nationalist than an Islamicist, and I haven't worn a headband since that Lover Boy concert. Thanks anyway.

But you encourage your wife and daughter to wear a bag over their heads, don't you?

Yeah, but I make my son do it too. That's just common courtesy. It's really not bad. We decorate the bags.

Gee, did Hamas tip its hand already? Hamas May Widen Its Horizons, Observers Say

Within hours of Rantisi's death Saturday in an Israeli missile strike in Gaza City, Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal was sounding very much in charge, ordering the Gaza branch to refrain from announcing the identity of its new chief. That was perhaps a wise precaution, but also an unmistakable assertion of Meshaal's authority.

I just said they sucked lately, kinda repetative. Not that I don't care about world issues, but sometimes it's just nice to read about jibberish that goes thru your mind at random. Like Mr. Microphone and the one about the little kid at the coffee shop, stuff like that.

let me clarify something & do it real quick. YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE WAR iN iRAQ TO THE ViETNAM WAR.
reason #1) there is no draft. the people who are over there signed up, with a sane mind, and knew that would end up in war sooner or later.
    >reason #2) not NEARLY as many people have died, nor will die. the death toll hasnt even reached 500. the death toll in vietnam was ooo SEVENTY THOUSAND YOU DIMWIT
    >reason #3) we have more sophisticated weapons & they have rocks (and some bombs).
    >reason #4) communism is completely different than a dictatorship, especially sadaam's. its better to ttake him out now then in 15 years when the people have been brainwashed even more.
so in conclusion, if i see ANYTHING else about the war in iraq being compared to vietnam, i will hunt you down & TEACH YOU A LESSON.
btw. im completely informed in all the goings on of war. my grandfather was a korean war vet (he died), my dad is a gulf war vet, and my brother is in iraq as we speak. thanks.

The comparison was made for humor's sake. Bush skipped out of Vietnam with a stint in the Champagne unit. That war was often referred to as a quagmire, the same can be said of Iraq. In the quote, I instill in Bush a sense of guilt that he missed his own Vietnam. Thus we have war to absolve a guilty complex. Hi Ho!

For the record, a more apt comparison is either the Israeli experience in Lebanon or the British experience in Iraq (1920). But Americans know little of their own past let alone the past of others. Nobody would have laughed had I said, "Was it guilt that caused Bush to start his own Peace for Galilee War since he missed the first one?"

By the way, the outcome of both those examples was not favorable to the invaders. Of course hubris drives this administration so we can't expect it to learn from the past. With apologies to George Santayana.

its not humorous when it offends someone, especially someone so affected by war.

I see. We're all like sticks. If we each act independently, then the enemy will break us one by one. But if we stick together, bound in a tight bundle, then the enemy will never break us.

Great spoof of a crazed uninformed bot controlled by the RNC brain wave machine! I almost fell for it. By the way, the US dead in Vietnam was 57,000 -- not 70,000.

I'm afraid you wouldn't know a dictatorship if you voted for one.

My old mans a funny guy. He spent the 60's and 70's a bonafide hippy. Smoked pot, did speed, drank too much and wears long hair to this day. And to this day, he thinks the vietnam war was a shitty idea. Despite all this, he thinks the draft is something that americans must imbrace to ensure their freedom. He's not talking about from foriegn armies or terrorist. He doesn't see a need for a bigger, more powerful military. He doesn't want a warrior class (akin to the middle or upper class or whatever) from forming. It would be dangerious if such a thing existed and exerted political influence. Secondly, I find it interesting that the number of people who died in vietnam directly correlates to the number of baby boomers who hold public office. just 14 years ago, in good old 1990, the number was about 55,000. Ten years later it was 65,000. Suddenly its jumped to 70,000??? Unless they're still fighting the war, that doesn't seem plausible. More like misinformation by oldmen who'd like to feel they were right about the whole vietnam thing. It terms of the army that we face, Iraq and vietnam are very similiar. Both are haphazardly armed and equiped, although all that Iraq army ordinance floating around gives the Iraqi's more of an edge then the viet cong had. When we fought in vietnam, we were superior to our enemy in everyway. We had more soldiers, who were better trained, better equiped, better suplied, equally motivated (despite fragging and drug problems, nearly 2/3rds volunteered for service)utilizing better tatics and strategy. Its true that vietnam had alot of problems, but theres no reason we should ever have lost that war. When Ho Chi Minh was asked how he defeated the american military machine, he responded with just one sentence "I divided the American People" The baby boomers were the tool of their own vindication. The Invasion of Iraq was like a divine gift. No leader of any nation could ever have asked for a sweeter deal. It was swift, casualties were light, and victory was total. However, as is nearly always the case, nobody planned for afterwards and things kinda came crashing down. We Hitler invaded the Soviet Union he was viewed as a great liberator everywhere outside russia he went. No one in german high command was quite sure what to do so they sent in the SS to figure things out. Rather then stir up good will they managed to turn entire nations against them. Thats kinda where we're at. Sure the bathist have become a problem but if we'd been prepared and fixed up their country right quick, the people woudl have nothing to bitch about. Happy people aren't keen on dying but people in sqalid living conditions with not a whole lot going on right now might be talked into fighting. The Iraqi's could never hope to beat us. Our causalties so far are about equal to 3 average days of World War2. More people die every year to inner city violence here in america then have died in combat in iraq since it started. But we came into this divided and everyday become more so. Everytime somebodies head rolls, we're a little bit closer to pulling out.

So to sum things up, I haven't had my coffee this morning and I'm a bit ticked.
