The insinuation that Hitler was Jewish first surfaced in 1923 as he stepped onto the world stage in wake of a failed coup attempt. Since a central pillar of his political agenda was greatness through Aryan purity, journalists thought it interesting to pry through his geneology. The first bombshell surface in a liberal Vienese paper. It was printed that Hitler's father, Alois, had changed his name from Schiklgruber to Heidler. (Hitler is a variation.) In his ground breaking biography, John Toland mentioned this twist of fate, "It is difficult to imagine seventy million Germans shouting in all seriousness, 'Heil Schiklgruber.'" Difficult or not, the revelation opened the door to other curious possibilities.
A slow but steady stream of journalists and opposition members trickled into northern Austria. They sought records from the Dollersheim parish church registry. Those records contained a second plot twist. The name of Alois Hitler nee Schicklgruber's father was added to the birth registry only in 1876, thirty-nine years after the actual event. That late entry was of dubious legitimacy and based on unconfirmed affidavits. A questionable transaction, it opened the door for further speculation. Since Adolf Hitler rose to prominence in the anti-Semitic far-right, it was delicious irony that fed speculation that his grandfather, unknown to this day, was actually Jewish. Such conjecture dogged Hitler throughout his drive to power.
Nearly three years before he was appointed Chancellor by the ancient Paul Hindenberg, Adolf Hitler held a private consultation with his lawyer, Hans Frank. The topic concerned a blackmail letter from a nephew who claimed Hitler had a Jewish grandfather. The letter probably never existed as the nephew in question was in and out of Germany until 1938. Surely, Hitler would have had the means to silence him. But the "letter" did provide opportunity to broach concern for the prospect of a somewhat less than Aryan grandfather. Frank was sent to Austria to investigate his client's past.
At this point the narrative is heavily depended upon the testimony of Hans Frank. Its details are provided by his autobiography which was penned as he awaited the gallows for crimes against humanity. Those crimes were committed in Poland during the occupation. According to Frank, he had reported to Hilter that his investigation had concluded that Alois Schiklgruber was indeed the illegitimate son of Maria Anna Schiklgruber. She had worked as a domestic for a Jewish family named Frankenberger in the city of Graz. She became pregnant during her tenure. According to Frank, the father was one of the family's sons. This assertion was based on correspondance between Frankenberger and Maria Schiklgruber. Those letters have never surfaced.
The accuracy of the events detailed in Frank's report to Hilter are not likely. According to Nikolaus Preadovic from the University of Graz, there was no record of a Frankenberger in Graz at the time of the events in question. In fact there were no Jews in the entire Styria Province. There were driven from the province in 1496 and did not return until 1856. There was a Frankenreiter from Graz at the time of Alois' birth, but he was the son of a Catholic cobbler. Hitler was not Jewish.
He may not have been Jewish, but that doesn't mean he didn't consider it possible. The details provided by Frank may have been wrong, but that doesn't mean they didn't pique Hitler's interest. On several occasions after 1930, the Gestapo investigated this issue on Hitler's orders. The records at Dollershiem were destroyed by the Nazis after the Anschluss. If nothing else, there was nagging uncertainty.
The lawyer's case was built on letter correspondance. If Frank actually presented facts to verify a Jewish grandfather as detailed in his memoir, then surely Hitler would have demanded to see the evidence. If Preadovic's research is correct, and it's been cited by authors far greater than I, then Frank would have been unable to produce such documents. Without that evidence, it's hard to believe the case was ever presented as Hans Frank detailed from a Nuremberg prison. Certainly Hitler was dogged by uncertainty. With so much riding on Aryan purity and given a lack of documented Aryan pedigree, why wouldn't he? But explanations for the Hilter phenomena built on the premise of the self-hating Jew seem far fetched indeed.

I agree that the premise that Hitler was Jewish seems far fetched, mainly because of the work of those who have looked thoroughly at issue, but also because I am reluctant to sign onto any single cause or psychological approach to Hitler -- the madman or the twisted ironic motivations. It's interesting how reluctant most are to concede to Hitler rationalism, intelligence or talent. I don't argue strongly for all 3 at all points of his career but they were there in various measures until late in the war. Most importantly from my perspective, Hitler had enormous political skills ,the ability to sense his enemy's weaknesses a key one. But Germany, while perhaps not ready for the continual radicalism of Nazi rule (that itself being a pragmatic political tactic for Hitler) was no stranger to dictatorship or to a foreign policy aimed at annexation in the East. These were but continuances of the cult of the Kaiser and the War dictatorship of the General Staff.

For those who do subscribe to the "single cause or psychological approach" to Hitler, more important than genealogical actuality was his interpretation of the circumstances. He could still be a self-hating Jew without a hint of Jewish heritage. I doubt two tales in this episode, Hitler's saga of the blackmail letter and Frank's account of his report to Hitler. If the Nazi leader was able to kill close associates, then what was the life of a nephew for whom had little but contempt? The opportunity to extinguish that pest was present up until 1938. The story was probably a ruse in order to introduce the possibility of a Jewish grandparent and to establish a context in which his genealogy could be investigated. Secondly, as recounted above, I doubt that Frank conveyed to Hitler the "fact" that his grandfather was Jewish because he could not have had evidence to support the claim.

I don't think there is much evidence to indicate that Hitler showed animosity toward the doctor who treated his mother. Kershaw addresses this in detail and I can't recall the specific details, but the doctor was either left alone in Austria during the genocide or ushered safely into Switzerland. In her excellent book, Hitler's Vienna, Brigitte Hamann concludes that Hitler left Austria without the baggage of antisemitism. Indeed, two of his "friends" at the Mannerheim were Jewish - scare quotes added to "friends" largely because Hilter was incapable of friendship. To the best of my knowledge, the only source of Austrian derived antisemitism is Hitler's own memoirs and that guy was full of shit.

For the Nazis, it was important to codify their prejudice. The criteria can be found in Article 5 of the Nuremberg Laws:

My History advisor met the criteria under section 2. On the night of November 9, 1938 members of the local Berlin Brown Shirts forced their way into the family house. They ransacked the place and left his sister dead in a pool of her own blood. Before the night was over, my former professor was on a train to Dachau despite his young age. His father, a wealthy Berlin attorney, bribed officials to secure his release. During the Nazi rise to power, the family transferred funds to Switzerland. They were able to use this money to secure passage to Britain. At the time, Britain would take no Jews unless they could demonstrate a capacity to support themselves without the benefit of a job. That stipulation prevented many from crossing the Channel to safety. My professor and his family survived the war. His father returned to Germany to help prosecute former Nazis in Nuremberg.

The disgrace and idiocy of your drivels and comments could hardly be more dramatic. Hitler was a Rothschild, he was part of the jewish illuminati bloodline.
In that stance, he was responsible for murdering his own people. And look at who benifitted from that: THE INTEGRETY OF THE JEWISH POPULACE. When you really look at it, Hitler was responsible for saving international Jewry. Whithout Hitler, their would be no state of Israel. Without the Holocaust, there would be no retrobution or compensation to fund Jewish activities, without HItler there would be no Jewish anti_defamation league (a league that provides a veil with which jews can perform their crimes and conspiracies in complete impunity), without German anti-semitism, there would be no Jewsih sentiment whatsoever(remember- jews where starting to adapt to european life and were begining to lose their jewish identity and culture).
If you look at recorded history, you'll notice that Hitler, the Holocaust and the Anti-Semitism actually benifitted Jews and Jewish institutions in every sensible fashion.
Oh, and without Hitler, we'd all be speaking german right now because Germany would have won the war beyond any doubt as they were the heavy favorites.
If you are a Jew, you should really praise Hitler rather then wish he was burning in hell and thank him for his help in installing jewish hegemony in the world in such a short timeframe.

The germanic race is a joke? Well, I believe the Nazis and Hitler were a joke. But really the Germans ( and Swiss, which I am, and Austrian as well ) are probably the best inventors and engineers on the planet. From the finest cars to rockets which made history, it was and is German engineering.

There is NO evidence to conclude that Hitler was part Jewish but that doesn't diminish the accomplishments of Germanic culture It makes the Hitler story that much more tragic. In 1933 the Nazis siezed power in perhaps the most cultured country in the world. Whole forests have since been downed in order to explain it. Sometimes I think we could have saved a lot of trees and summarized it like this: shit happens.

Some of this conversation is very interesting. I particularly like the notion that Hitler may have "killed" part of himself when he killed the Jews (if he was indeed part Jewish). And he also "killed" part of himself when he killed Jews who were part German!
In that vein, some writers alluded to the idea that Hitler was self-destructive. That seems pretty apparent, and considering the outcome of the war and his suicide, he certainly had that final effect on Germany and on himself.
If you read Adolf Hitler's book, "Mein Kampf" (My Battle or My Struggle), you will find that the ideology he espoused was almost diametrically opposed to the things we value today.
We love and appreciate diversity and individual freedom and creativity within the context of a greater whole.
The Nazis were self-centered and hated anyone different than themselves. It is understood today that if they had won the war, they would have eventually even turned on their alley, Japan, because they considered orientals to be inferior. They probably would not have killed the Japanese and all other orientals, but they had plans to enslave them along with other various ethnic and national peoples they considered to be inferior. They (the Nazis) were very powerful because they had unity, but without righteousness. They had singleness-of-purpose, but without morality or ethics. They had excellent hierarchical organization, but without a God.
Sometimes extreme patriotism, even within a "good" system, can cause a people to become what they fear or dislike the most. I hope we all learned a lesson from Hitler, and in our overzealousness to spread democracy, we don't make that same mistake, and become something we hate, something we hate because we know it is wrong. And then become like Hitler; self destructive.
In the final analysis we are in reality (aside from our individualities and our prejudices,) after all is said and done: One World; and One Family.

In Fact, one of Hitler's own "tenets" or personal policies, was that any resistance or force should be met with greater force.
Instead, like someone said, let's learn a lesson from Hitler and the terrible destruction and suffering and death that he caused,... by NOT being like him.

I couldn't agree more. The holy men and women and the religions of the world ask us to do that very thing (to control and overcome our basest instincts to be violent and aggressive.)
We started feeding a stray cat recently and he came in the house very wild and nasty, clawing and biting, etc. (as you might expect from a wild person - I mean cat.) We got mad at him one day and made him go out. Something happened in that one day. The next day he came in he was like a person who found religion, he was nice and appreciative after that, has never sprayed in the house, always uses the litter box, has learned to "ask" us for things, likes pets, and although he is still very independent, he has developed a very nice loving relationship with us. I'm not saying he never slips a little and swipes at us, but he seems to understand what he can do; what he is supposed to do, and he is very different that he was, and in a way so are we, because we can love him now even more than we did before.
If a cat can do it (become tolerant and control his aggressive behavior) I'm hoping we can do it too.
So maybe like with the 9/11 tragedy we can use our experiences, our collective memory, Hitler's mistakes, to learn and be better.
Shame on us if we can't learn from our mistakes, and condemming all those people to die and suffer in vain.
