Last Sunday Chad Pennington, the New York Jets quarterback, registered a perfect score in the imperfect quarterback rating system. His single game passer's rating was 158.3. Since the rating system was adopted, only a handful of quarterbacks have achieved its highest mark. But of that group, Pennington is the only one to register a notch in the loss column. So what went wrong?
While Pennington and Co. efficiently scored 24 points on 34 offensive plays, their opponents, the Indianapolis Colts, ran 77 offensive plays. The Jets defense failed to get off the field; New York's defenders effectively took New York's offense out of the game. They were more effective in this endeavor than were the Colts. For the game, New York averaged .7058 points per play while the Colts averaged .4935. For a victory, the New York defense needed only to reduce the Colts' offensive plays by ten to 67. For the season, the Colts averaged 61.7 plays per game.
Sunday's contest was hardly an abomination. New York ranks 31st in both time of possession and number of offensive plays. While they are nearly dead last in each of those categories, they rank tenth in points per play. Had they generated an average number of plays, they could have increased points-scored by 2 and reduced points-allowed by 1.8 per game. In other words, if the Jets could have averaged 62 plays per game throughout the the season, they would have beaten Washington, NY Giants and the Colts to sit in playoff contention at 6-4.

Two percent of this site's readers hail from countries outside the United States, or, as George Bush likes to call them, the colonies. For those visitors this entry makes no sense. As a service to our foreign friends, I present Rate My Boobies. Don't worry, they're not my boobies. You will be asked to rate the boobies of average American women who cast aside religious prudishness and present their cans to a rating system scaled from 1 to 10. Enjoy.
