  • Blog Day Afternoon In Sacramento They Love The Guv'nor - Blog Day Afternoon

Arnold Schwarzenegger's accomplishment in Tuesday's gubernatorial election was nothing short of phenomenal. In a very crowded field of candidates, the Terminator managed to capture 52% of the vote. Thank Isis for Article II section I of the United States Constitution. That section blocks his ascendency to the nation's highest office. I quote, "Ah-nold is forbidden to Goose-step into the Oval Office simply because the People enjoy his action Films." Perhaps I don't have all the words in the right order, but the hurdle remains in place.

Americans have been willing to vote for candidates on the basis of name recognition. Once political discourse on Hollywood's red carpets starts to feel as empty as it is, celebrities aren't shy to seek a more meaningful political vehicle. Voters aren't shy to assist their rise to levels beyond their competence. Ronald Reagan couldn't graduate beyond B movies, but minor stardom was enough for the Gipper to grab the governor's mansion then later the White House. Sony Bono went from a network variety show to mayor of Palm Springs to a seat in the House of Representatives. Bill Bradley, Jack Kemp, and Steve Largent all used professional sports as a spring board into politics.

So what does this say about American politics? In short, money, fame and personality are key elements of a successful campaign. But you already knew that.

Remember NAAFA, the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance? They are the group that attacked Southwest Airline for charging passengers for each seat they occupy. Well Southwest isn't the only company NAAFA has in its sites. While Honda was busy complying with Federal guidelines, the NAAFA was busy spilling over into the passenger's seat. National guidelines requires cars be equipped with seat belts that support a person up to -- what the NAAFA describes as "only" -- 215 pounds. Rather than sue Honda for complying with Federal regulations since, well, they have no case, the NAAFA considered a product boycott. When Honda offered to assist the organizer a competitor's product, she opted to simply be a pain in the ass. It's strange, you can read it here.

I've always said Jet fans were loud. It's up to the Jets to channel that noise. When the team does well, the opposition gets and earful, when they don't play well, the Jets get razzed. Two weeks ago New York lost its fourth straight game of the season. By the fourth quarter the stadium was uncharacteristically quiet. I'll accept my share of blame. For the first time in my career, I was too disgusted to even boo.

What are you going to do this week when they lose to Buffalo?

If they lose, then I'll get in my car and drive home. Of course if they win, then I'll also get in my car and drive home. This is a really strange question...

I agree comletely with NAAFA. As a matter of fact, I sat in a car once where the roof line was so low my head hit the headliner. I am still pressing the manufacturer for the roof pillar extenders. So far they have been unresponsive.

Some people think Arnold and other immigrants should be given a shot.

The Equal Opportunity To Govern Amendment

I'm glad they're for equal opportunity in something at least.

You gotta love their glorification of the September 11th tragedy. It's like they're waxing poetic with two simultaneous explosions. Of course that was the moment Bush was granted license to engage in all the activities he campaigned against, deficit spending, nation building and renegeing No Child Left Behind.

While I'm pleased that his Excellency's ratings are dropping, I am also worried. Everytime his ratings drop around 50% something terrible has to happen to the American People to boost them back up. His shoddy Presidency was eroding before September 11th and had dipped again in January of this year before Operation Iraqi Freedom.

I don't mean to imply conspiracy, just to point out that with the "Luckiest Man in the Universe" around, his good fortune is our sorrow.

Relax, Sen. Orrin Hatch is introducing a Bill to ammend the Constitution to allow the foreign-born to be President.

He'd have more success with the Ashcroft method, first introduce a bill to amend the constitution which makes it easier to amend the constitution, then introduce a bill to allow another Austrian the legal means to sieze power away from home. It's going to be hard to arrange fifty-one stars on a blue field after Ah-nold completes the Anschluss.

Someone once said on this site in a comment that , even if he didn't vote for the person for president, he would "stand by my President, because he IS the president," or some such. It wasn't until later, after I got home, that I started to think about all those people in Germany who stood by THEIR Austrian leader, who listened to his word and wanted to believe it. Blind patriotism is dangerous.

Yes, Julie, I'm going to strap on my jack boots and start saluting while W feeds people into gas chambers. What color is the sky in your world?

What if W revokes citizenship of enemies of the state by decree, and ships them off of US soil to be held indefinitely and subjugated to torture?

I like Martians. What if fucking Martians fly down and rape babies? Does that mean I have to still support Martians? Give me a break.

You of course are assuming that they had *not* taken over the minds of all their erstwhile supporters, and that's a damn big assumption.

If only "enemy of the state" was a class only including baby-rapers. Alas, it is quite larger, and seems to grow with each session of The Congress.

If Kevin the One Armed Boy performed a Nazi salute near a rail line and failed to noticed the oncoming locomotive, then that would certainly explain a lot.

Julie, I know that certain someone that posted the phrase quoted.

There is a serious difference between a quote like that where you are showing support for an elected official and blind patriotism.

Your leap is a dangerous one and a terrible misquote.
