Does the following offer a hint that something might be wrong with American culture and capitalism? Or not? I look forward to your comments.

5/13/03 Ray Romano became series television's richest star Sunday when he signed a deal to continue on the CBS comedy Everybody Loves Raymond through 2004 for $1.8 million per episode, or a total of nearly $40 million.

I'm reminded of the exchange between Rainier Wolfcastle and The Critic:

Wolfcastle: The film is just me in front of a brick for an hour and a half. It cost eighty million dollars.
Jay Sherman: How do you sleep at night?
Wolfcastle: On top of a pile of money with many beautiful ladies.
    Jay: Just askin'.

All I know about that program is from what I see in fast forward as I fly past commercials during my weekly viewing of the most recent episode of 24, the show about Elisha Cuthbert's ability to wander into life-threatening situations each hour and show off her perky breasts and pristine bottom (there are sub-plots in the show about a terrorist nuclear attack and a presidential coup, but who cares about *THAT* stuff).

Therefore my viewing of Raymond comes to about four seconds per week, so I don't think I'm qualified to say whether or not he deserves that kind of cash. But Elisha Cuthbert sure does. Get her Raymond's agent!

    So now I know:
    • what matt is all agog about
    • why funkman won't come to the brewery on Tuesdays
    • that I am a dinosaur

TV programing sucks. Fox has made millions expoiting America's hunger for original entertainment. What bothers me more is that American Idol has become news worthy.

Anybody want to take bets on how long it takes Mark to learn how to thread his messages?

I confess to watching the first half hour of the first episode of Joel Millionaire, as well as the last episode. This was worth it, as now I can enjoy the laughs when Joe $1M calls into Howard Stern and is stumped by grade-school math.

Despite what one might think when one sees attempts at humor conveyed in computer code, Jeff *DOES* occasionally emerge from behind his terminal and actually set foot outdoors.
