In the March 3rd issue, Newsweek broke the story of Iraqi defector Lt. Gen. Hussein Kamel. In it, they recall the results of the interrogations of Kamel where he says - get this - Iraq did destroy all its Weapons of Mass Destruction the first time around! Uh-oh - that tale isn't so good for the War Party who, having exhausted their other fables, are relying on the Weapons of Mass Destruction canard.
I've been wondering the whole time Bush has been talking about WoMD and how Iraq has to prove it doesn't have them - how the heck do you prove a negative? I only have a degree in Physics, not one in something advanced and of social significance like history, so maybe I don't understand logic, but generally it is difficult to prove a negative.
If the WoMD exist, then how about the US point them out to the inspectors so they can go get them? Oh, wait, they already did that. Powell went before the UN claiming that Iraq had failed to disarm, yet Blix reports when they look, there is nothing there. I'm sure the War Party black-helicopter crowd has a conspiracy theory that claims Saddam moves his WoMD right before the inspectors arrive but simple guys like me prefer simpler theories that don't require eventing invisible actors; maybe there just are no WoMD.
Is it possible that - *gasp* - the US government might be lieing?
Kamel had been used as a source by the US indicating Iraq's failure to disarm, but what Newsweek actually found was that his interviews claimed the opposite.
Maybe I'm too cynical any more, but I am less surprised that this hasn't been mentioned on the TV news than I am surprised that the story appeared in a major news magazine at all.
