  • American Empire A Voice from the Right - American Empire
Posted by Matt (Wednesday February 19 2003 @ 09:40AM EST)
The US government and the major US news media have been doing a splendid job of marginalizing the antiwar movement, portraying them as card-carrying communists who defend Saddam the socialist. Saddam's secular socialism is a convenient fact when red-baiting the antiwar movement despite its inconvenience when trying to invent links between Saddam and bin Laden's fundamentalist Islamic fascism.

The United States is about to begin a war for which we have no serious international support, against a poor nation who poses no threat to our sovereignty. This new American Imperialism is, of course, opposed by the left for many reasons: classic anti-Americanism, anti-Bushism, pacifism, and a true desire to avoid subjecting poor, non-white people to destruction and death followed by military occupation. The antiwar left is not swayed from their course by the tactic of jingoist rubrics. Some wear the anti-American badge with honour.

However the antiwar movement is not solely the left's movement. I am antiwar because I have a passion for this nation, the constitutional republic of individualist freedom. War destroys the republic, as it has since Greece and Rome. As antiwar conservatives, it is our duty to resist the marginalization and make known why we are against the war: Empire destroys our freedom, and make no mistake, this war is about American hegemony in the Middle East - Empire.

In this column I will explore the Empire as its builders make their moves - abroad and within our borders. We must connect ourselves to the antiwar movement by using our conservatism, march alongside our fellow antiwar leftists, and reclaim the right from the neo-conservative Empire builders. In the words of Murray Rothbard:

For years you have taken your political advice and much of your line from assorted 'exes': ex-Communists, ex-Trots, ex-Maoists, ex-fellow travelers. I have never been any of these. I grew up a right-winger, and became more intensely a libertarian rightist as I grew older. How come I am an exile from the Right-wing, while the conservative movement is being run by a gaggle of ex-Communists and monarchists? What kind of conservative movement is this? This kind: one that you have no business being in.
